Flatpack and Fierce 2011

It’s festivals a gogo with the Fierce and Flatpack festivals kicking off today with a whole load of interesting stuff coming to Birmingham between now and Sunday.

You’ll no doubt have done the decent thing and booked up a load of tickets for both of these already but, if not, there should still be time. I’ve had a nosey through the programmes and reckon that I’ll be going to the following:

Tuesday:

Wednesday:

Thursday:

Friday

Installations and ongoing things that I’ll try to catch when I can:

All subject to having to work to do and so on. Plus I’m not around this weekend, which is a shame because there’s some ace stuff happening.

What are you going to be going to?

Co-produced by VIVID & Fierce, this Saturday, 5 March, will see a public intervention held by artist Eitan Buchalter, from 11.30am – 3.30pm on Heath Mill Lane.

Buchalter will be expanding on his current body of work exploring how we flow through and interact with public spaces and what happens when aspects of our environment are disrupted

Not revealing what the full nature of this ‘intervention’ will be, he’ll be targeting the pedestrian traffic en route to the local derby between Birmingham City FC and West Bromwich Albion, with vouchers for free beer at a local pub. A quick flick through of his past projects and he seems to do a lot of standing… Perhaps that’s something to look out for?

‘Veer’ will also be broadcast live online at This is Tomorrow, from 11.30am.

As an In Association With … artist at VIVID and a Fierce Festival 2011 artist, he’ll also be featuring at this years Fierce Festival, with a talk, workshop and intervention.

Call for Participants: The slightest movement, Fierce & Quarantine

Quarantine, in partnership with Fierce, are hosting a project entitled The Slightest Movement, bringing together groups of strangers to create a temporary community which openly debates difference, exploring tolerance and ‘otherness’.

The task is repeated every day for a week.  Each day the event is re-invented according to what happened the day before.  A small group grows into a large one, gathering more and more strangers into a temporary – perhaps uneasy – community.

The slightest movement will take place 20-25 September in West Bromwich, and are inviting a core group of 15 people, both artists and non-artists, irrespective of background and experience to join this project. If you fancy getting involved, apply using the application via their website www.qtine.com by 3 September.

Autumn Exhibition Opportunity – Call for Designer Makers, Brilliantly Birmingham

This year’s Brilliantly Birmingham festival is taking place  27 November 2010 – 9 January 2011, and is set to visit a variety of venues across the city, including the Flux exhibition of contemporary jewellery design at the mac.

A dynamic and ambitious exhibition of new and emerging designer makers will promote challenging and diverse new work, create a marketplace and contribute to the city as a visitor attraction.

Flux is currently open to submissions from emerging designer makers based in the UK, who are no more than five years out of graduation. There’s no exhibition fee, but submissions have a £20 admin fee.

Application packs can be downloaded from www.brilliantlybirmingham.com and must be submitted by 3 September.

Who Wants To Be…?

26th
May
2010

Nice idea this:

Who Wants to Be…? is a spontaneous, democratic, live theatrical experience where the public really do take control. People propose ideas, discuss, and then vote on how to spend the evening’s entire box-office takings: Donate it? Invest it? Gamble it? Waste it? Form a collective and make the best idea happen yourself? You, the audience, decide

It says it’s inspired by Birmingham’s City of Culture bid, rather than being part of it, although the Hippodrome and Fierce (who are putting this together) have been involved in the official thing too.

It’s on 11 June Tickets are a tenner and they’re available here.

Thursdays have been pretty stuffed with lots of good activities recently but there’s a biggie going on tonight over at AE Harris.

Fierce are hosting the Fierce Start Party with all sorts of things going on.

  • 3-9pm – food, installation, performance
  • 7pm – words
  • 9pm-late – post-party with music

What, you may be asking, is a Start Party?

It’s the beginning of an exciting journey. What will be there? Fierce Festival artists sharing tasters of their work. When’s the next festival? We’ll tell you the shape of Fierce’s next year

Exact details of what’s happening are being kept under wraps but what we do know is that this is tomorrow will be on hand to capture proceedings, bITjAM will be providing audiovisual goodness and Mama Feel Good will be providing tunes. The latter also let slip this:

I’ve heard rumours of vodka soup – lord a mercy

Indeed. Fierce party’s are usually pretty legendary and this is open to all, so don’t miss out.

Fierce Start Party

1st
Mar
2010

This arrived in my inbox a little while ago:

Being an obedient sort, I went to the website and it seems that, having had a few months to settle into their new roles, Laura and Harun, the new co-artistic directors of Fierce are starting to let their influence hang out.

Their blog’s up and running and has a few interesting bits n bobs on it already. Harun has compiled a list of Thoughts, recollections and impressions of a city new to me (well, him) and there’s a joint post mulling the role of arts festivals generally which includes this observation:

it is increasingly the case that performance and music festivals operate as informal touring circuits; with one successful show passed like a baton from festival to festival. Although this may serve the reputation of a particular show, is this the role of a festival?

Fierce are set to re-launch their Platinum artist development scheme for artists living in the West Midlands. The scheme is funded by Arts Council England West Midlands and seems like an ideal opportunity for artists looking for some feedback and guidance.

Here’s an outline from Fierce:

If you are an artist and want to have some time and space to figure out how to develop your work, make useful and helpful connections that will forward your career and have fun in the process, then PLATINUM was made for you.

If you’re interested in taking part in the Platinum scheme, I’d suggest you contact Indy Hunjan on indy@wearefierce.org. The deadline for submissions is 12pm Friday 5th March 2010.

For more information and an application for, please visit their site here.
