Creative Republic managed to snatch victory from defeat the other night – the star turn couldn’t make the ‘Creative Masterclass with Michael Wolff‘ so instead we were given a chance to ponder what the Birmingham’s presentation of our very important (as we’re constantly being told at the mo) creative scene.

Stef Lewandowski kicked things off with a pretty scathing presentation of Birmingham from a tourist-eye view.  He had walked the city, camera in hand, trying (and generally failing) to find signs of creativity. He’s keen to point out that his negativity was slightly exaggerated but it was interesting that the vast majority of his criticisms went unchallenged.

Stef’s presentation is online.  The slides are good quality but you’ll have to excuse the audio in places:

Sat in groups, we were then given the chance to chew over some of the points raised before reporting back to the rest of the class people there.

The chat has continued away from the event though.

  • As well as uploading the slides and audio, Stef has put up a blog post called ‘A creative director for Birmingham?‘ with many of the photos used, text to explain them and a few extra thoughts too.  The comments following his post are worth a read too.
  • Graphiquillan wasn’t at the event but the subject of Stef’s talk chimed with her, prompting musings on the subject of ‘finding the creative needles in Birmingham’s haystack‘.
  • Paul Groves’ post ‘Creating a stir in Birmingham‘ rounds up the thinking and suggests that despite “a lack of clarity and vision in recent times” we now seem to be getting “the sort of lively and informed discussion that is long overdue”.
  • Dave Harte has picked up Stef’s theme on his Birmingham Post blog with ‘Birmingham – The Uncreative City?‘ suggesting that, as well as making some good moves in rejuvenating the city, mistakes have been made – privatising public spaces, pricing out independent retail and approving uninspiring architecture.

The idea is for some of the thoughts collected over the course of the evening (and since) to go towards informing a future event with Michael Wolff and perhaps a submission to the Big City Plan itself.  There’s still plenty of time for anyone to join the discussion.

On Thursday evening last week, Creative Republic brought together council leader Mike Whitby and head of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, Jerry Blackett to discuss the role of Birmingham’s creative industries in the Big City Plan.  Mark Ball (at the lecturn in the pic) hosted.

Rhubarb Radio were there to record the proceedings and have a link to an audio file of the speeches.  There are some photos in the gallery on the Creative Republic site and here are Pete Aston’s notes in mindmap form.

What I took away from the evening was that nothing’s yet set in stone and there’s still a lot of work to be done on developing the plan.

The thing is, things are currently at the talking stage.  It’s hard to get a sense of what direction things are taking as there doesn’t seem to be anything we can really get our teeth into, dissect and inspect.  I think I remember Mike Whitby saying that there might be something more tangible to look at in October.  A follow-up event is in the offing.

The other thing that was impressed upon us all is that, in terms of employees and Gross Value Added, the creative sector is comparable in size to the city’s lauded financial sector.  There’s a lot of latent power there that could influence the way the city develops.

We were told that if anyone wants to get involved in shaping the plan then there’s no need to wait for an invite.  Unfortunately the mechanism for getting involved isn’t that clear, although according to the Big City Plan site, Richard Healy is the initial point of contact for anyone wanting to get in touch.  You can call him on 0121 303 3075 or email richard.healy@birmingham.gov.uk.

Helga Henry from Creative Republic said that they would be asking everyone who was there to submit one big idea for Birmingham.  They’ll be collected together and presented to the Big City Plan peeps.

To feed into that, and perhaps addressing anyone who hasn’t signed up to the Creative Republic charter:

What’s your big idea for Birmingham?

Whack it in the comments and it’ll be thrown into the mix.  I’ll start things off…

Last weekend Rhubarb Rhubarb presented the ninth Rhubarb Review:

A very exhausted yet happy Rhubarb team would like to say a very big “Thank You” to everyone who took part this year. You all helped to make it one of the most successful Rhubarb events ever. We’re back in the office and planning the tenth Rhubarb already. Watch this space and check your e-mails for updates. Later this year we’re holding another Cultivate event – dates and venue to be announced soon.

The Creative Republic website is hosting this video of the event:

Yeah, ok, no-one likes ‘networking’.  Fine.  How about going for a drink with some good people?  Yes?

Ok, well there’s a few things coming up.

  • On Friday there’s Likemind, hosted by James from Supercool and Lucie from Saint Caffe at the latter’s cafe on St Pauls Square.  Drop in any time between 8.30am and 10am to grab a coffee and have a natter.
  • On Monday 23rd there’s a meet-up of a group loosely calling themselves ‘bloggers’ at the Flapper & Firkin.  Details are on the Paradise Circus blog and here’s the Facebook event.  Drop in any time after 6pm.
  • Last, and certainly not least, Creative Republic are hosting an informal get-together at Concrete, just under the Big Peg in the Jewellery Quarter on Thursday 26 June from 6pm.  They promise

No pack drill… No speeches… And no cost

Which is as good a sales pitch as you’re likely to find.  Details are on the flyer here.  Please RSVP to that one so they know how many to expect.

Creative Republic (who fund this blog) are organising a series of events over the next few months, the first of which focuses on the West Midlands Cultural Olympiad which is

a four year celebration of culture and creativity that will be launched over the weekend of 26 September as part of the plans for the London 2012 Games

Details on the background to all this can be found at www.london2012.com/beinspired.

Here’s the invitation to this particular event. Attendance is free but you’re asked to register here and also encouraged to sign up to the Creative Republic Charter (if you agree with the principles, of course).

Update – there’s also a Facebook event for this.
