Launching on 23 November is Ikon’s latest exhibition, a retrospective collection of work by Len Lye, featuring film, sculpture, painting and drawing.
Lye’s philosophy of ‘Individual Happiness Now’ – a belief in the possibility of ‘the best in human experience’ for all – is embodied by this exhibition; a testament to the simple joys that inspired him.
The launch evening on 23 November starts at 6pm, and includes a performance from Birmingham Conservatoire’s Percussion Ensemble at 8.15pm.
The following night on 24 November, Ikon will be holding a talk from 6-7pm with Len Lye Foundation curator, Tyler Cann, who’ll be discussing Lye’s work from animation to kinetic sculpture. Tickets for this are £3 and can be bought from the Ikon shop or by calling 0121 248 0711.
‘The Body Electric’ will be on display until 13 Febuary 2011 at Ikon Gallery, Brindley Place, which is open Tuesday – Sunday 11am – 6pm.

Happy 20th Birthday to Glen Howells Architects. They’ve sent us this nice little book filled with photographs from their many projects over the years, including a few familiar buildings from Birmingham’s iconic skyline, such as the Rotunda, The Custard Factory, and Eleven Brindley Place.

Finally something for the adults to do over the summer! Ikon are running a two day summer school on Wednesday 11 and 18 August.
To tie in with This Could Happen To You, this summer school gives those who remember Birmingham in the 1970s the opportunity to undertake a two day programme of reminiscing, remembering and recording. Working with the Learning Team, a variety of material processes are used to explore memories of Birmingham. Based at Ikon, Brindleyplace these creative activities also require participants to work across the city centre.
Materials and a tapas lunch from Café Ikon are also included in the price, which is £30 for both days.
There are only 15 places available so if you fancy treating yourself to an artsy day with tapas, call the Ikon Shop on 0121 048 0711 to reserve your spot.
Starting this Sunday, 15 June, and continuing every third Sunday over the summer, Brindley Place is hosting an arts market.
A number of local, up and coming artists will be displaying pieces of work at the event. These include Alice Gow, Antony Bridge of Pochade, Ken Hurd and Christopher Collier.
They’re keen to grow this event and are looking for artists who want to exhibit their work, so get in touch if that applies to you – details are on the Brindleyplace website.
