CiB Projects

Want to write something on CiB?

We get plenty of emails from people wanting to contribute to the blog but the answer’s always the same – put that stuff on your own blog and perhaps we’ll link to it. Mainly that’s because CiB’s always been about encouraging others to have their own outlets for expression.

We probably won’t be able to post everything but maybe this’ll turn into a regular thing. Or maybe we’ll give March over entirely to guest posts and never do it again. Who knows? Maybe we won’t get much of a response and we’ll forget this post ever happened.

Topics for discussion

That’s up to you, just don’t get us into too much trouble.

Maybe there’s an area we don’t do a very good job of covering, or something you want to have a rant about (opinions are good) or maybe there’s something that you know that you want to share.

You may know of an undiscovered portion of Birmingham that deserves a mention, or want to feature some amazing local talent you’ve come across. Maybe there’s a problem that’s not being addressed. Whatever you have to say, we’re open to ideas.

Format

Text, video, photo – whatever suits you best.

A note about self-promotion

This isn’t an opportunity for some free press, advertising space or link spam. If you want to promote yourself/your clients then by all means advertise with us or get in touch with us in the usual way.

How to get involved

Simply click this link and fill out this form. At this stage we just want to know who you are and roughly what you’d like to talk about.

Fancy coming and watching a film? On Thurs 28 Jan The Bullring are showing a few feelgood films at The Electric and we’ve been invited to ask folks along to the later showing.

There are 120 free seats available for Amelie at 7.15pm with some food and refreshments thrown in too.

If you’d like to come along then just RSVP to holly.ryland-jones@bullring.co.uk. Sorry, all places are gone now!

Knowing Me, Knowing You

The first of what might become a regular thing, Knowing Me, Knowing You was fun last week. As part of Capsule’s longest birthday party… ever, we got together and invited a bunch of interesting people along to introduce themselves and say (for the sake of getting a conversation going) what they might do if they were to get their hands on VIVID for a little while.

The kind participants were:

All ably compered by Jon Bounds with half-time entertainment provided by Charlie Pinder‘s cake orchestra.

Truth be told, we weren’t sure what people would come back with or what sort of direction the evening might take. As it turned out, ideas included:

  • Social spaces
  • Turning the place into a massive ball pool/packing it floor to ceiling with jelly
  • Setting up a swapshop
  • Using it as a place for realising unfinished ideas
  • Creating an edgeless, white room and projecting images through hung pieces of perspex
  • Kipple Live
  • Artist talks

And some other things that escape me just at the moment. To be honest, the suggestions themselves weren’t the most crucial part of the evening. The point was really to get people out, meeting each other and sharing thoughts and ideas. As far as that goes I think the evening was a success.

Capsule have written up the event here with lots of lovely photos. Thanks to them, to everyone who took part and to those who came along to watch.

For the next CiB Project we’ve been asked to take part in Capsule‘s 10th birthday celebrations. We’re getting together a bunch of Birmingham creative types, putting them on a stage for 3 minutes and asking them ‘What would you do if you were given the run of a space like Vivid?’

Featured folks will include:

ATTA Girl, Scott Johnson aka Film Ficciones, Stephen Earl Rogers, James Yarker of Stans Cafe, local historian Ben Waddington, illustrator extraordinaire Ben Javens to name but a few

That list is from Capsule’s website.

There are 20 places left for spectators, so if you want to come along then please admin@capsule.org.uk. If it goes well it might be the first of many such events.

There’ll be full reporting back after the event, so if you can’t make it down then don’t worry.

Kings Heath Big Party

That’s me (on the right) working the mulled wine stall on Saturday at the Kings Heath Big Party.  A huge thanks to everyone who came down and bought a cup of something warm.

In fact, a fair few thanks are in order:

I’ll soon be putting up some info about the next project that’ll see CiB getting out and about in the world. I’d best write some posts about other folks first though.

Announcement time.

Created in Birmingham are going to be running the mulled wine stall at the Kings Heath Big Christmas Party on 5 December. Woo-hoo!

Stop. Flyer time:

If you’re about then please do come and say hi, this blogging stuff is lovely but real life’s great too. Also, the money you spend at our stall will go towards the Kings Heath Centre Partnership and the maintenance of this fair website. Oh yeah, but please drink moderately (we should have hot chocolate for sale too).

There are details of the event here and a PDF of the programme here. Good things that are happening:

This’ll be CiB Project 001 and the first of many. In fact, details of CiB Project 002 are coming soon and it’s a good un. Oh yes.
