The good ship Capsule sails into double figures in December and they’re putting on a succession of parties to celebrate that fact.

CBSO – Street Maestros

A nice project from the CBSO, Street Maestros will allow people to bid (via eBay for Charity) for various experiences with the world class orchestra.

The chance to win a conducting masterclass with the Andris Nelsons (CBSO’s Music Director) is a pretty big deal, and those who can play violin, viola, double bass or cello might fancy playing on stage with the main orchestra.

Bidding opens on 19 November. Here’s a teaser vid which raised a few smiles:

It’s actually a little tricky to find out about local music around the city, I find. This is the stuff I know about, feel free to add other stuff in the comments.

News

Brum Notes is the website for the free, monthly music and lifestyle magazine (Nov issue out now, Oct one online here).

The Birmingham Post have news and reviews here and the Birmingham Mail do rock/pop news.

Fused Magazine’s site does the odd bit of music news, as does the website for sister magazine Area.

Surge Music takes a wider, Midlands-wide view of things, with articles and lists of gigs, bands and venues.

Cul-de-Sac turned out to be a false dawn for this sort of thing, but may come back one day.

@birminghamlive and @brumpunks are good sources for concert info too.

Reviews

Birmingham Live is the obvious choice here – someone from their ranks of volunteer reviewers and photographers will be at a gig in Birmingham pretty much every evening. Steve Gerrard organises this one (Lee Allen and I have also chipped in occasionally).

The Hearing Aid is a blog by someone called The Baron who goes to an impressive number of local gigs.

The Birmingham Mail do gig reviews too.

Get-togethers

The Birmingham Music Network meets monthly at the Department of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (T.E.E.) at Millennium Point. Their website has a good range of resources too.

Audio

I’m on shakier ground here – which radio shows promote local talent There’s Brumcast on Rhubarb Radio and Introducing on BBC WM. I don’t know enough about the shows on New Style Radio, Aston FM or any others.

Theatricalia and Black Routes

A couple of things with a national scope, born out of Birmingham have been launched recently.

First up, Theatricalia is the work of the ever-impressive Matthew Somerville. It’s ‘a database of past and future theatre productions’ which makes it no less than IMDB for theatre.

Already it contains archives of plays and performers from the RSC, Bristol University Archive, the Royal National Theatre and Birmingham Rep (1913-1971). You can search by play, person or place and edit entries yourself to help the archive grow.

The potential for Theatricalia is a little mind-boggling.

Black Routes is a new UK wide touring network for African and Caribbean music, with Punch Records as one of the founding partners and chair.

Punch’s Ammo Talwar wrote an article in the Birmingham Post explaining the context for the project, particularly how it fits in with what’s happening in Birmingham at the moment.

Jibbering’s 10th Birthday

Yet another 10th birthday to add to the pile – Jibbering, the multi-faceted music/art promoters, are heading into double figures and will be celebrating that fact at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath on 14 November.

Over the years, as they say:

we have staged over 150 concerts and parties presenting the finest music Birmingham has to offer and hosting some of the most exciting live bands from further afield

Details of the night (who’s playing, etc) are on Jibbering’s website and the Hare & Hounds‘ one too.

So big congrats to them. I’ll try and grab them for an interview at some point – if you’ve got any questions for them then please throw them in the comments below.

STRAX AV 5

Audio visuals treats will abound on Friday 23 October at The Victoria. There’ll be local talent in the shape of DJ Mark Smallman, STRAX DJs, Chromatouch, Sam Redmore and Joseph Potts from Modulate.

Even more impressively, there’ll be a performance by Oli Sorenson, aka VJ Anyone. This guy’s one of the world’s best and doesn’t play such intimate venues very often – he’s usually working at the behest of top name dance acts and fancy brands.

As well as all that they’ll have all sorts of fun cleverness in the form of the Tagtool, Wiiwhorld, and 10-player Bomberman.

Oxjam Brum 09

Oxjam Brum is taking over a bunch of Birmingham pubs/bars on Saturday 24 October for a fundraising, musical extravaganza:

Showcasing the very best of local, grassroots music whilst embracing national upcoming talent this will encompass over thirty acts, over six venues and all for one ticket which will be exchanged for a wristband on the day

The venues involved are The Flapper, The Prince of Wales, Basement Bar, The Victoria, Island Bar and the Sunflower Lounge. Here’s the list of bands.

The point of it all is to help raise awareness for Oxfam’s work on climate change. Tickets are only £6.

Some thoughts on Birmingham’s music scene

A couple of music-related things came out over the weekend both adding up to paint a less than rosy picture of Birmingham’s current live music scene.

The Interactive Cultures team at BCU have launched MusicAsCulture.org – a place to discuss the idea that ‘music is not just commerce’. It’s not an exclusively local thing, but it launches with a Birmingham-focussed campaign dealing with the noise issues at The Rainbow in Digbeth. The campaign is being headed up by UB40 and is called Live, Loud and Local:

Here in Birmingham, as with many places elsewhere, heritage music venues are in danger of closure or losing their live music licence because of issues of noise. Areas that were once not residential now have tenants, and the clash between apartment dwellers and local music venues has demanded a response at a policy level

UB40 will be playing a one-off gig at The Rainbow on 3 November to raise money for a new roof on the building in an attempt to reduce outside noise. I don’t know where you can get tickets from yet, but then nor do the folks on the UB40 forum.

Meanwhile, Fused interviewed Johnny Foreigner who aren’t afraid of sticking the boot in. They’re working on a documentary about how Birmingham’s music scene “suffers as a result when compared to other major cities”, which they see as a result of neglect by the council. Their advice for the city:

Drop the ego like Liverpool or nurture the homegrown stuff like Leeds and see the results in five years time when there are famous and forward looking bands not ashamed to say where they’re from

BCMG season launch and ticket offer

The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group kick off their new season on Friday 16 October with two concerts in one.

It’ll start at 6.30pm with a ‘Spotlight on Matthew Sergeant’ and is followed at 7.30pm by a programme featuring premieres of a couple of BCMG’s ‘Sound Investment‘ commissions.

Matthew Sergeant is/was Apprentice Composer-in-Residence at BCMG and there’s a couple of interviews with him – one from the start of his residency and another at the halfway stage.

There’s a ticket offer for the Friday night too – just quote ‘Welcome’ when booking online or over the phone on 0121 767 4050.

Sing! Right Up Your Street

a week long celebration of the adult choirs and singing groups in the West Midlands Region. Choirs across the region will be opening the doors to their rehearsals and welcoming new members as well as in some cases streaming their rehearsals live on the internet

Midlands Music Festival round-up

The line-up for this year’s Glastonbury Festival was announced today, and what a mediocre one it is. Like a lot of huge festivals it relies on the expected roll out of faded heroes and next week’s hipsters. If you are looking for a more, dare I say, ’boutique’ experience there are plenty of music festivals around the UK such as The Green Man Festival, End of the Road and All Tomorrow’s Parties.

Moseley Folk Festival by H4NUM4N

But thousands upon thousands of music lovers, from metal heads to twee folksters head to the Midlands every year to experience our independently run festivals, well crafted events that are deeply rooted in the community they came from.

So, forget V, Leeds and Glasto, get yourself along to one of these West Mids fests:

BASS Festival (British Arts and Street Sounds) is the UK’s only month long celebration of Black Music and Art. Every June, the UK comes alive with a phenomenal line up of events, new commissions, gigs, exhibitions, master classes, showcases, club nights, theatre, conferences and film. This year’s theme is ‘Inspired by Africa and Africans’, celebrating and exploring Africa’s influence on the UK arts scene.

When: June. Cost: Free – £10

Moseley Folk Festival has been running for 4 years now, programming a healthy mix of traditional, contemporary and downright experimental folk and acoustic music. The festival is held in what feels like a world away from Brum’s City Centre within the gorgeous woodlands of Moseley Park. This year’s line up includes: Beth Orton, Saint Etienne, Jethro Tull and Kris Drever, John McCusker & Roddy Woomble.

When: 5th, 6th and 7 th September. Cost: £10 – £65.

Supersonic Festival is definitely one for those who don’t like the mud, but do like loud and experimental music. If you think you don’t, go along to this Custard Factory festival anyway and you may just have an audio visual experience to remember, which has to beat standing the rain listening to Kasabian, right? When: 24th – 25th July. Cost: £15 – £75

Indie Tracks Festival is all a twee navelgazer could ever need in a festival; indiepop bands, a museum, churches, farms and most importantly stream trains. Set further afield in Derby, this fairly new and unspoilt festival is certainly worth the journey from Brum, and is steeped in rural Midlandsness.

When: 24th – 25th July. Cost: £30 – £55

Other more than worthy regional mentions to go Gigbeth, Birmingham International Jazz Festival, CoCoMad, Wolvestock and Summer Sundae. This isn’t a definitive list, so feel free to add your recommendations in the comments.

Colour Presents: Charlie Parr

Being the editor of CiB comes with certain privileges, one of them being the opportunity to give your other projects a cheeky plug.

As you may know I co-run Colour live music events, and we are putting on our first ever Birmingham gig at The Victoria next Tuesday.

The evening will feature music from 3 live acts, projected vintage slides, free homemade cakes and us pretending we can DJ. If you do come along please come and say hi.

We are also really chuffed this month as we will co-hosting the closedown party of Flatpack Festival this year.

When running any project/ festival/ organisation one of the most difficult things to get right (and one of the most important) is the visual identity or dare I say it, ‘brand’. When putting any publicity together: flyers, posters, website etc. it is so important that the visual elements speak to your intended audience and tell something of the ethos of the organiser. When I have put together publicity for projects in the past I have found that the finished artwork is sometimes missing that magic ingredient, which for me is illustration.

In my opinion promoters Capsule utilize the magic of good illustration just right. Each piece of design they commission is executed with full force, and this ballsy, risk taking approach is one reason why they run some of the most well recognised events around.

Ben Javens has created these posters for Capsules Jan / Feb events and they are quite typical of the bold, hand printed style you can see on his weblog, he has some lovely bits for sale in his shop too.

Fused Magazine at SXSW

Fused Magazine is working with UK T rade & Investment, getting together a group of music industry types to visit this year’s South by South West Music festival, held in Austin Texas this March. Fused are also offering £500 towards expenses for the chosen promoters, Labels, Managers, etc. Last year Fused rounded up some up and coming UK bands and flew them over perform at a Fused @ SXSW event.

Why apply?
The SXSW MUSIC AND MEDIA CONFERENCE showcases hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over eighty stages in downtown Austin. By day, conference registrants do business in the SXSW Trade Show in the Austin Convention Center and partake of a full agenda of informative, provocative panel discussions featuring hundreds of speakers of international stature.

The fund covers up to 50% of your costs. These costs can include: your event pass or ticket, travel expenses and accommodation costs. Costs will be reimbursed upon production of receipts up to a maximum of: £500.

Applications close on 20th January, to apply fill out the short application.

Autumn Store’s 101 bands from the West Mids

Dunc from the Autumn Store has compiled a non-exhaustive list of 101 West Midlands bands. Non-exhaustive because he gave up at 101 and because he set himself two restrictions:

There were two criteria to this, firstly, they must have a myspace page and secondly, they must have spent most of their musical lives inside the West Midlands Bus Network

The result is slightly reminiscent of the Myspace Marathons BiNS’ did for Gigbeth and Dunc’s patience in pulling together that many links to MySpace pages has to be applauded.

Film maker needed for Mother India: 21st Century Remix

One of the best events I went to last year was Kala Phool’s Mother India: 21st Century Remix – a live re-scoring of the Bollywood classic that blew me away. I’ve wittered on about it on my blog.

I was really pleased to hear that the musicians will be in the studio (in Birmingham) next week to record the soundtrack and Kala Phool are trying to put together a national tour for later in the year.

Kala Phool are after a film maker to make a kind of video ‘calling card’ for this. However, the bad news is there’s no budget available for the work. I must say I don’t tend to like posting these sorts of requests but I’m making an exception in this case.

If you’re still interested:

Filming will happen on Fri/Sat 16-17 January at studios in Aston near The Drum
They need some short interviews with the people involved and some footage of the band in the studio
There’s plenty of footage from the live shows already
They’re looking for something like the video of The Bays and Heritage Orchestra at the Liverpool Phil
The finished piece will be needed by the end of January

Damian Frey at Modulate

Last year Modulate put a call out for a ‘Sonic Beatnik’ to undertake a three month International Artist Fellowship and, among the applicants from 24 countries, New Zealander Damian Frey was selected.

In May 2008 Damian re visited us in Birmingham and we took the opportunity to talk to him about his experience of being here, and how the residency had impacted on his creative path since then. We also collaborated on a piece of work, something we hadn’t done much during his residency.

a variety of projects from creating soundtracks and effects for animations to wowing crowds with his all hardware improvised liveset. When time permits he also dabbles in the design and build of obscure musical instruments

A dumping ground for other bits and pieces including the effect of smearing vaseline on a camera lens, fun with kaleidoscopes (pic above) and a project called Your World. For the latter, Sam says:

I give you a disposable camera and a stamped addressed return envelope; you fill the camera with photos of Your World and send it back to me for processing

Steve Tromans – Bomb

I’ve had an email from Steve Tromans, a Birmingham-born composer who’s been globetrotting for a little while and, well, I’ll let him tell it:

I’m emailing to tell you about my upcoming return to Birmingham – specifically at the Yardbird Jazz Club, Paradise Circus, on Thurs 8th January 2009. I’ll be presenting the premiere performance of my musical setting of Gregory Corso’s “Bomb”, which is part three of a project I have called “Beat Series”. Back in 2003 I was commissioned by Birmingham Jazz to write “Howl”, part one of the series.

Fellow composer and poet Sid Peacock will be narrating and vocalising, Birmingham jazz scene favourites Chris Mapp and Miles Levin are on bass and drums respectively.

David Rowan and Tak!

David Rowan’s new website has cropped up on a fair few blogs recently and with good reason. It’s real purty, with a stack of great photography on it and is dead clever to boot.

David is a photographer at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and also lectures, consults and does bits of art design and graphic design.

The website was put together by Tak! and has a soundtrack provided by Chris Herbert which is remarkable because it’s interactive (try moving the three lines about) and didn’t have me reaching for the mute button like most autostart music on websites.

Mr Hudson signed by Kanye West

Oh, the glitz! The glamour! How often do I get to quote someone like Kanye on CiB? At the MTV Europe Music Awards the other week he said:

I believe Mr. Hudson has the potential to be bigger than me, to be one of the most important artists of his generation

Mr Hudson, if you weren’t aware, is a lad from Handsworth Wood and the latest signing to Kanye’s GOOD Music label. So blimey, and congrats to a local boy making good.

I came across this via the awesome Soul Sides:

The London/Birmingham based quintet, Mr Hudson and The Library dropped Tale of Two Cities in March of last year and made some noise in the UK but never really arrived stateside. Maybe it’s because the music speaks rather simply for itself, or the band didn’t have the flash of something revolutionary(!) in their sound. But of course, that’s all set to change…

After co-starring with Kanye on what is in my opinion the absolute standout sleeper track on an album full of standout sleeper tracks and producing or contributing to a handful of others (”Street Lights”, “Robocop” and “Say You Will”), the group has now signed to Kanye’s GOOD Music and, critics be damned, will likely forge on with General Kanye West leading the charge toward the future of pop music.

Free tunes from Zang Productions

Zang Productions are a new one to me. They are:

Birmingham based indie label promoting hip-hoppers The Custodians and Barrowclough, singer/song-writers Bethan Marshall and Selina Blakeney, and electronic-folk rappers Greybeard, Benjamin Blower and University of the King

Actually, Barrowclough will be supporting Public Enemy at the Custard Factory tomorrow (Wednesday 3 Dec).

Anywho, the reason I’ve encountered Zang is because they’ve put together a Christmas album and have put it out as a free download. I’m listening to it now and can vouch for its festiveness.
