Congrats to Chloe Blackwell who won the National Express Student Bands compo at Gigbeth last weekend.

I didn’t realise this but the competition took place in the coach station itself which seems an inspired idea. As Chloe says “it was probably the most unusual place I have played in. There were coaches coming in and out all the time and people were dancing as they queued to get on. The atmosphere was amazing.” Hmm. There’s a potential here…
Since I’m old enough to be her dad I wouldn’t want to inflict my judgment upon the music but going on the MySpace it seems pretty good.
Congrats to the Birmingham Royal Ballet who won the Outstanding Achievement In Dance Award from the Theartical Management Association for their Stravinksy! season earlier in the year. More info and quotes at The Stirrer.
The Ten4 blog has posted the list of 4Talent Award winners, three of which are from Birmingham:
The awards will take over a large chunk of Ten4 Magazine issue 8, out in November.
The Muslim Writers Award, an initiative coming out of Birmingham City Council which had its inaugural ceremony in April, goes national in 2008.
The idea of the project is to assist and nurture emerging writers and get them published. We are looking at the writers creative talent – not their religious beliefs. The Awards were televised and went out to 150+ countries and we hope to reach as many new writers (and readers!) as possible.
The categories for the 2008 Awards are:
* Non Fiction
* Short Story
* Novel Award
* Poetry Award
* Under 16s
* Best Children’s Story
* Best New Writer of the Year
* Best Published Writer (to be nominated by publishers)
The 2008 Judges include Randa Abdel Fattah (author of Does My Head Look Big in This?), Emma Hargrave (Managing Editor of Tindal St Press), Bloomsbury publishers and Sunny Hundal (Editor of Asians in the Media).
Alongside the awards there’s also a support program including, editing support, creative writing courses and master classes, networking opportunities, support in finding publishers and more.
The deadline for submissions is December 28th and all the details are here.

The MEGAs are the Media Guardian Innovation Awards (MEGIAs? MEGUs?) “designed to recognise and celebrate innovation across the media industry” in the following categories:
Innovator of the year
Rising star of the year
Independent blog
Launch
Design innovation
Digital innovation – creative
Digital innovation – technology
Community engagement
Brand identity
Advertising campaign
PR campaign
Commercial communication innovation
There’s an entering fee of £200 per category except for the first three where nominations can be made by anyone for free. So have a think about who your favourite innovator, rising star or blogger is and throw a nomination in the pot.
While I wouldn’t want to encourage any regional block nominating I think it’s fair to assume everyone in that London will be nominating someone else from that London so a bit of affirmative action wouldn’t go amiss.
Thanks to Gaz at Bearded for the heads up.

The video from the Creative City Awards at the ICC is up. Watch it here. Via Digital Central who have links to all the winners.
