THEM LOT is a collective of artists from Bristol to Birmingham. They’ll be exhibiting some work and doing some live drawing at Urban Outfitters on Thurs 7 August. The show includes a large mural you’ll be able to see from New St (or from inside the shop, obviously).
From 12 – 30 August, Ikon is running a tailor shop in the old Salvation Army charity shop, 3 New Street, Erdington. Led by creative facilitator Jess Worley and local members of the Erdington Arts Forum, the shop will be making small fabric whales designed by pupils from Erdington Hall Primary School
It’s to tie in with Claudia Losi’s Balenaproject – the installation of a lifesize cashmere whale at the Ikon gallery in September (obviously…). Rather than something that big, the tailor shop will produce 85 of the smaller whales.
If you can sew, have at least eight days to commit and would like to get involved with the project then give Claire (Ikon’s Education Curator) a call on 0121 248 0708.
While we’re on the subject of the Ikon, the gallery is still opening til 8pm on Wednesdays until 10 September and the guests for the remaining ‘These are a few of my favourite things‘ are:
6 August – David Prentice, one of Ikon’s founder artists
13 August – Glenn Howells, architect
20 August – juneau/projects/, artists Ben Sadler and Philip Duckworth
27 August – David Lodge, writer
3 September – Kelly Large, artist
10 September – Jonnie Turpie, Director of Digital Media, Maverick Television
Places for those are free but need to be reserved by calling Ikon on 0121 248 0708.
Jibbering Art‘s next exhibition will focus on Newso who will be:
using this exhibition to bridge the gap between his alter-modern abstract, studio based paintings and his crisp spray paintings, that he creates on the streets of Birmingham
Newso won Secret Wars Birmingham at The Rainbow back in March, as covered on the Monorex blog and in this rather nicely put together video:
The exhibition starts with a launch night on 14 August and will be there until 24 September. There’s more info and examples of Newso’s work on the Jibbering Art website.
Mark at Surely has posted up the new promo for The Destroyers – the riotous, Birmingham-based, 15 piece genre-botherers – on the Surely blog:
Directed by John Humphreys and shot by Prime Chris in the late hours of a friday night in May, the merry band bring the dawn in atop a multi story with city views.
And here it is:
The Destroyers will be playing the Moseley Folk Festival at the end of August, which I really must grab a ticket for.
