Wifi Networks detected in Birmingham So Far This Year

I think this counts as some kind of artwork.

Jon Bounds has an iPhone which picks up WiFi networks as he walks around Birmingham. He’s been making notes of their names and created this piece of digital folk art. Or something. Bigger here or as a poster.

I note he hasn’t been past my flat…

It’s possible I’ve been past, but without a pen and paper. Hi-tech as the iPhone might be, I still needed to write them down on the back of a back of an envelope.

Funnily enough I recently blogged about wireless network names: http://www.untyped.com/untyping/archives/2008/02/naming_your_wir.html

It seems the US takes a rather different approach to the UK when it comes to naming wireless networks!

it only seems like yesterday when one of the pages i started on birmingham alive! was a user-submitted wifi map of the city centre – a project which lasted all of about six months after the place became so saturated it would be easier to map the dry spots rather than the wet spots !

I actually getting a bit obsessed with this now – I thought that when I’d done the poster I could stop thinking about it. Have done a further blog post on it
