Artsfest 2007, the tenth Artsfest in Birmingham, has been announced for the weekend of 14th – 16th September.
ArtsFest is looking for artists and groups from Birmingham and the West Midlands to join with us in creating a vibrant cultural spectacle that profiles the wealth of talent and diversity within the city and region.
Those of you who would like to participate over the weekend need to apply through our online forms. Please pick the category that best describes your piece of work. This will help the ArtsFest team programme your work effectively. The deadline for applications is 30th April 2007. You will then be contacted if you have been successfully programmed by the end of May.
If you would like to discuss your application prior to submission please contact the ArtsFest team on 0121 464 5678.
There’s also a Call for Volunteers:
The festival needs volunteers to help steward the events taking place, if you would like to gain some experience or just have fun and meet new friends then don’t hesitate to contact ArtsFest on 0121 464 5678 or alternatively email artsfest@birmingham.gov.uk
Volunteering is open to anyone over the age of 18 who lives, works or studies in the West Midlands, no previous experience necessary.
And you get a really neat shirt.
There are some rather neat photos from last year’s event on Flickr, even if I do say so myself. Check out this slideshow.
“This event is postponed until the weather conditions improve. Please keep checking the site for further announcements. If we all close our eyes and wish really hard for the wind to change we can make it happen!”
I have a vision of myself sometime in 2008 writing “Sky Orchestra Update 56″…
Hi8tus are looking at the feasibility of setting up and running a Comic School cementing their work in supporting comic book illustration through the Stripsearch program.
It’s worth emphasizing that this is at a very early stage – the tender for the feasibility study has only just gone out – but it’s worth noting as there isn’t anything like this in this country, though it was tried in London in the late 80s and early 90s. In the US there are a number of classes and departments at colleges and schools for comic art so it’s not necessarily a pipe dream.
If anyone does take up the tender and wants some contacts for those who’ve tried it before do get in touch as I can probably help you. (Your first port of call will probably be Paul Gravett.)
Here’s the consultancy brief (PDF).

and here’s what was in the accompanying Word doc.
The Fierce website now says Thursday morning, weather permitting. So Thursday morning it is!
Claire Galleries is an art gallery based on Tenby St in the Jewellery Quarter.
We are a gallery of vibrant colour and innovative contempory and traditional art. Our Gallery prides itself on the quality of the work that we exhibit and the relationships we have formed between ourselves, our clients and our artists.
We are pleased to offer a truly stunning collection of printmaking, photography a wide range of original paintings in many different mediums including, oil, watercolor and acrylic. Limited edition prints and sculpture also feature heavily in exhibitions.
Their list of artists has a lot of Birmingham and West Mids names in there and they regularly have themed events and shows.
One interesting service they offer is free hire of their gallery space for “personal or corporate events” (with catering on top) which presumably helps promote the gallery and artists to potential new customers.
The new Digital Central website launched recently. Digital Central, if you’re not aware, is a regional development project working in the digital media and music sectors. Essentially that covers film, television, animation, interactive media, computer games, digital imaging, music and radio. In government-agency-speak:
Our aim is to develop an enterprise culture for cluster businesses that will help accelerate economic growth and increase employment through the promotion of innovative new ideas, the development of new market opportunities and the nurturing of a new generation of cluster entrepreneurs.
Digital Central undertakes activity against three key strategic themes: networking, showcasing and innovation.
Networking is one of the key goals for the website (along with a forthcoming Showcase section) with an emphasis on building a community from the somewhat disparate companies and individuals who make up the sector by sharing news and informational along with encouraging comments and debate.
Naturally the website was built by a variety of local businesses. The project was managed by Antonio Gould and Spark and Zoom, sIte design and build was by The Persuaders, art direction by Plus Two, marketing by Fish in a Bottle, the Showcase site is being built by Studio M and the content is being provided by 3form and myself.
Yes, I’m working on this, specifically the blog-like The Feed. Hope you like it.
Not happening Tuesday morning.
I’ll keep you posted as I hear about Wednesday / Thursday.
Shame it’s not a dusk thing as it’s quite lovely out tonight…

I regularly get forwarded emails like this:
Claire Galleries are currently looking for artists who have produced tactile work.
The work will be incorporated into our ART4ALL event in Warwick.
The event will coincide with Gala Day which is an event for the partially sighted. Due to this we have decided to incorporate some tactile / touchy, feely work. The work must be appealing to both the partially sighted and sighted. The event will take place on Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th of July.
This project is suitable for artists who have an interest in the partially sighted and surface materials.
If this appealing to you please send some examples of your work along with a description.
Please do this by e-mail to mailto:gemma@clairegalleries.co.uk
or send in a disk to Claire Galleries, The Orb, Tenby Street, Jewellery Quarter. Birmingham, B1 3ELThe Deadlines for submissions is the 20th of May
I’m kinda reluctant to post them here lest the blog turn into a big job market but there doesn’t seem to be a central web-place for this stuff to get promoted. It just circulates around the usual email lists not necessarily reaching as many people as would be useful.
Is this something we should be doing at Created in Birmingham? Is there a need?
Rhubarb Rhubarb (the West Midlands based photography training and development agency) are organising a coach trip to photo-london, “London’s international contemporary photography fair”. Entrance is £15 and they’re hoping to include this with the transport fee for £25.00, leaving early on Sunday June 3rd from central Birmingham.
Taking place at Old Billingsgate the website lists the following stats:
55 exhibitors: 33 galleries, 8 publishers and 14 international Art magazines
10 coutries represented
7,800 square metres floor space
20 000 visitors expected
There’s also a programme of talks:
The programme of talks, debates and round tables is designed to promote the collecting of photography and to inform both collectors and the general public on the evolution of contemporary photography since 1970 and its value on the art market. First-time photography buyers and members of the public will benefit from the experience of internationally-known experts whose presentations will provide an overall education on the subject as well as specialist knowledge on specific issues surrounding contemporary photography. Both seasoned collectors and the public will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance from these leading figures in the world of photography.
Anyone interested should email Lorna-Mary Eebb at info@rhubarb-rhubarb.net for details as soon as possible.
